The Best Credit Card for Students
A typical student budget, $610 a month, earns $130 a year on the BMO Student CashBack Mastercard. It has no annual fee, and student loans count as income. Here is how to pick your first card, and how to use it to build credit.

The whole post in one picture. The receipts are below.
Your first card matters less for the cash back than for the credit history it starts. Five years from now, that history decides your apartment application, your car loan and your phone plan. The cash back is a bonus. Still, there is no reason to leave $100 a year on the table.
Who can get a student card
- You're old enough. You need to be the age of majority: 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and PEI, and 19 everywhere else.
- You're in post-secondary. Student cards are for college and university students. TD's offer asks you to put "Student" as your occupation on the application.
- You have some income, or none. BMO counts a job, a scholarship, a student loan or money from family. CIBC's student cards say plainly: "No minimum income requirement."
- International students can get one too, but BMO and Scotiabank ask you to apply in a branch, and CIBC's limit for international students is up to $2,000.
What a student budget earns, card by card
I used a simple budget: $300 a month on groceries, $100 eating out or on delivery, $60 on your phone and streaming, $150 on everything else. That's $610 a month. Every rate below comes from the bank's own page on October 28, 2026.
| Card | Annual fee | Every year | Year one |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMO Student CashBack Mastercard | $0 | $130 | $181 |
| CIBC Dividend Visa for Students | $0 | $100 | $211 |
| RBC ION+ Visa | $48, refunded for students | $124 | $274 |
| RBC Cash Back Mastercard | $0 | $91 | $191 |
| TD Cash Back Visa | $0 | $58 | $183 |
"Year one" adds the welcome offer, if you meet its spending rule. Points cards are counted at the bank's own value: RBC says 1,400 points buy a $10 gift card.
My pick: BMO Student CashBack Mastercard
Groceries are a student's biggest bill, and this card pays 3% on groceries, the highest of the no-fee student cards I checked. It also pays 1% on your phone bill and streaming, and 0.5% on everything else.

bmo.com, October 28, 2026. The blue band is the welcome offer: 5% cash back for three months. The three rates underneath are what you get after that.
- Every year: $3,600 of groceries × 3% = $108, plus $22 from everything else = $130.
- Year one: the 5% welcome offer covers up to $2,500 of spending in your first three months (up to $500 of it on groceries). On this budget that adds about $51, for $181 in total.
- The cap: 3% stops at $500 of groceries per statement. At $300 a month, you'll never hit it.
- No rush: BMO takes applications for this offer until October 31, 2027.
If you have no income: CIBC Dividend Visa for Students
This is the card for a first-year student with no job yet. CIBC's page says "No minimum income requirement", and it has the best first year on the list.

cibc.com, October 28, 2026. Look under the Apply button: no minimum income, and a limit of up to $5,000 for Canadian students (up to $2,000 for international students).
- Welcome offer: $25 after your first purchase, plus 10% back on your first $1,000 of purchases, within the first four statements. That's up to $125.
- After that: 2% on groceries, 1% on gas, transit, restaurants and recurring bills, 0.5% on everything else. $100 a year on this budget.
- The catch: you don't qualify if you opened or cancelled another CIBC Dividend card in the last 12 months.
If you bank at RBC: ION+ Visa
The ION+ pays 3 points per dollar on groceries, restaurants, delivery, rideshare and streaming. Its $48 fee is refunded every year while you're a student, as long as you also have RBC's student bank account.

rbcroyalbank.com, October 28, 2026. "Up to $200 of value in gift cards" is RBC's own conversion. The deadline is in the headline: November 4, 2026.
- Every year: 17,400 points on this budget, which RBC values at about $124 in gift cards.
- Year one: up to 28,000 bonus points. 7,000 come on approval, 14,000 after $1,500 of spending in six months, and 7,000 on your first anniversary.
- Without the RBC student account, you pay the $48 fee and it drops to $76 a year. Pick BMO instead.
Offers that end this week
Three student offers end in the next few days. Don't apply for a card you don't want just to beat a deadline. But if one of these is already your pick, apply now.
- TD Cash Back Visa: $125 when you spend $1,000 in three months. You must open the account by November 2, 2026. After that it earns only $58 a year on this budget.
- Scotiabank Momentum No-Fee Visa for students: 5% on your first $2,000 of purchases over three months, for accounts opened by November 1, 2026.
- RBC ION and ION+: apply by November 4, 2026.

td.com, October 28, 2026. The end date is in the green flag above the offer. TD's fine print limits it to full-time post-secondary students.
How to build credit with your first card
Your credit score runs from 300 to 900, and lenders check it for the rest of your life. Canada's two credit bureaus are Equifax and TransUnion. Here is what moves the score, from the federal government's consumer agency and from Equifax:
- Pay on time, every time. Payment history is the biggest part of your score. Set up an automatic payment for the full statement balance the day the card arrives.
- Use less than 30% of your limit. On a $1,000 limit, that's a statement balance under $300. This counts even when you pay in full every month.
- Keep your first card open. A no-fee card costs nothing to keep, and the age of your oldest account helps your score.
- Apply for one card, not five. Every application is a hard credit check, and several at once look bad on a thin file.
- Check your report for free. Equifax and TransUnion both give you your report online at no cost, and checking it doesn't lower your score.
And the rule that matters more than any cash back: pay the full balance every month. These cards charge about 21% to 22% interest. Carry $500 for a year and you pay around $110, close to a whole year of grocery cash back.
